NDA HISTORY |
|
The NDA was formed in 1976 by John Smith, a wood-work teacher, and some friends. For about three years it was just friendly competition with a few teams and a few venues - but what venues..........Gleneagles Hotel on Shirley Street, Green Shutters Restaurant downtown, Mz Magg's Club on West Bay (later King & Knights), and the Gallery on East Bay. In 1979 the NDA really took off. After John had single-handedly run it for years, everybody, it seemed wanted to play darts. A real Executive Committee was formed, with John as Chairman, and to make sure everybody was represented, a Captain's Committee was also involved in decisions. Fourteen teams registered for the 1979-1980 season. In following years up to twenty eight teams got out on Wednesday night to play competitive darts. That was the peak, but for the last eight years the NDA has fielded twenty four teams. John Smith left his legacy on more than the NDA. John, having seen darts played at the professional level in England, felt that the Bahamas could compete. In this vein, in 1983, John helped to form the Commonwealth of the Bahamas Darts Association (now known as the Bahamas Darts Federation). John left the Bahamas in 1986, but not before he saw his dream come true. The Bahamas sent a team to the Caribbean Cup in 1984, and John himself accompanied a team to London in 1985 to compete in the Winmau World Masters Tournament. Since then the Bahamas has shed it's light all over the world in darts, competing in the World Cup as well as proving itself dominant in the Caribbean. |
